Australia Updates Onshore Student Visa Process for 2025
Changes to Onshore Student Visa Applications Effective 1 January 2025
Starting 1 January 2025, the Australian Department of Home Affairs will introduce a significant update for onshore Student visa applications. Applicants submitting their Student visa applications from within Australia will no longer be able to rely on Letters of Offer. Instead, they must provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) at the time of application.
Key Points of the Update:
- Applicability: The new rule applies only to visa applications lodged on or after 1 January 2025. Applications submitted before this date with a Letter of Offer will not be affected.
- Validity of Applications: Applications without a CoE will be deemed invalid. An invalid application cannot be assessed by decision-makers, and applicants will not receive an associated Bridging visa.
- Alignment of Requirements: This change ensures consistency between onshore and offshore Student visa application processes. Providing a CoE demonstrates a stronger commitment to studying at the chosen institution and supports the stability of Australia’s international education sector.
Exemptions:
The updated requirements do not affect alternative forms of evidence for specific groups, including:
- Foreign Affairs and Defence-sponsored students
- Secondary exchange students
Maintaining Lawful Visa Status:
Current visa holders in Australia must ensure they maintain lawful status at all times. If you plan to study but cannot obtain a CoE before your visa expires, you have two options:
- Depart Australia before your visa lapses
- Explore alternative visa options that suit your circumstances
It is important to note that recent changes have introduced restrictions on applying for a Student visa in Australia while holding certain other visa types. For detailed information, refer to the “Ending ‘Visa Hopping’ in the Migration System” update.
Impact on Students:
This change is designed to streamline the application process and strengthen the integrity of the system. It ensures that students are fully committed to their studies at the time of application, providing greater certainty for both students and educational institutions.
Stay informed and plan ahead to ensure a smooth visa application process under these new requirements.
